JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Safety Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining comprehensive safety programs to protect employees, subcontractors, clients, and the public on construction projects throughout Montana. This role ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state, and client contract-specific safety requirements while fostering a proactive, collaborative safety culture across field and office teams.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop, implement, and enforce company-wide safety policies, procedures, and site-specific safety plans.

  • Ensure full compliance with OSHA regulations, EM 385-1-1 requirements, Montana Safety Culture Act, and client contractual safety obligations.

  • Conduct regular jobsite safety inspections, audits, and hazard assessments; document findings and follow corrective actions to completion.

  • Collaborate with various management levels for maximum observation and inputs on job site safety

  • Lead incident, near-miss, and injury investigations; prepare clear, accurate reports and recommend preventative measures.

  • Manage injury and illness reporting, workers’ compensation coordination with HR, and regulatory documentation.

  • Deliver safety orientations and tool box talks.

  • Work with the Learning & Development Manager to provide formal training programs for employees and subcontractors as needed.

  • Serve as a safety resource to project managers, superintendents, and crews by providing guidance and practical solutions to field conditions.

  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with internal teams, subcontractors, clients, and regulatory agencies.

  • Review project plans, job hazard analyses (JHAs), and activity hazard analyses (AHAs) for risk mitigation and compliance.

  • Participate in pre-construction meetings and ongoing project meetings to integrate safety into planning and execution.

  • Track and analyze safety performance metrics and trends; prepare written summaries and recommendations for leadership.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor of Science in Safety Management, Construction Management, Occupational Health, or a related field (or equivalent experience).

  • Minimum 3–5 years of safety management experience in the construction industry, preferably in commercial, heavy civil, or mechanical construction.

  • OSHA 30 certification required; additional certifications (CHST, CSP, or similar) preferred.

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites throughout Montana.

SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Thorough knowledge of OSHA standards and EM 385-1-1 safety requirements, with the ability to apply them to active construction environments.

  • Strong risk and liability awareness, including hazard recognition, exposure reduction, and loss prevention strategies.

  • Excellent written communication and documentation skills, with proven ability to create clear reports, policies, training materials, and regulatory records.

  • Relationship-building and collaboration skills to effectively engage field crews, supervisors, subcontractors, and general contractors.

  • Ability to influence and coach personnel at all levels to promote safe work behaviors.

  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and follow-through.

  • Ability to work independently across multiple active job sites in varying weather and terrain common to Montana construction projects.
